Crunch time to buy

I'm getting conflicting information. I've flat towed Jeeps in the past however they are very pricey with a load of miles on them. Then I hear NO awd vehicles can be flat towed. I'm looking at Chevy Equinox.

What is the criteria for flat towing this vehicle. AWD ? Fwd ? 6 cyl ?

Can a FWD Ford Escape be flat towed without having to spend $$$ for drive shaft disconnect ?

Thanks.
  • are you looking to buy new or used? Motor Home magazine has lists of vehicles that can be flat towed on their website.

AFAIK engine displacement us not a factor.

jeeps which have a manually selectable neutral position in the transfer case can be flat towed. jeeps with AWD or CVT may not have a manually selectable neutral position. the best source whether or not a specific model or vehicle can be flat towed is the owner's manual.

The actual Engine Size isn't the issue, but the Power Train that's matched to an engine, maybe even the Trim Level of the vehicle, IS. For example, some of the Fords are towable if engine is V6 but not the 4Cyl. It's not about 4 vs 6, it's that a different transmission is used.
You can start with the MoHo Magazine towable vehicle listings. Narrow it down. But then verify from the vehicle owner's manual. Most are available on line.
  • but before you buy a toad understand the various weights and weight ratings of your MH.

the amount of weight you can safely tow will be the lesser of the following:

    - the gross combination weight rating of the MH minus the actual weight of the MH as it is loaded and configured for travel

    - the weight rating of your hitch

    - the weight rating of your tow bar
  • I just got a 2014 Equinox 4 cyl. AWD. The owner's manual says to put the tranny in neutral, key in accessory, shut off all accessories like the radio etc and pull a fuse on the inside fuse box. Pulling that fuse diables the electric steering (I think only the 4 cyl has this) and leads to something called the death wobble. Most people leave the fuse in and charge the toad from the 7 pin connector.

I got all this info right here in this forum.

    Equinox Being Towed

Mine weighs 3700 lbs and has a 65 MPH speed limit. I too was dismayed at the price of 10 year old Jeeps and Honda CR-Vs when looking for a toad. It's like they were made of gold. For the price of a 10 year old CR-V with 150,000+ miles I got a 3 year old Chevy with 30,000.

If you want a sedan, the Malibu has the same setup.
  • Looking at a Saturn View and a chevy Equinox. Do the towing miles on either of these vehicles add into the odometer or are they like Jeep that doesn't add the miles ?

As long as the key is in the ACC or OFF position miles DO NOT accumulate on the odometer when being towed.
