OK I don't understand why this is preferable to a loop recording. with it my previous ?? hours are recorded. no need to hit record.

No disagreement at all. I prefer the 30 second loop, smaller video size means smaller memory card. By all means, nothing wrong with hours of video backup... you just have to fast forward through it all to get to the end, which is likely all you would ever want to see.
