We are about 150 miles straight south if Deadwood (on the highway, closer as the crow flies), we can actually see the Stateline Casino off 385 with binoculars. We aren't sure exactly what our storm total was because the wind blew so hard it drifted into drifts as high as 6 feet. Rapid City and the whole Black Hills area got hit hard and it is common for that area to get that amount at least once per year. Since we are so early in the season, could be this is only the 1st of a few storms this winter.
The storm moved in Thursday night with high winds, power went out at 2:30 pm Friday and did not come on until Saturday @ 8:30 pm. The wind did not stop until late in the day Saturday. We had our woodstove cookin' and with the temps not really "cold" yet (not much below 32) our house never got below 58, so things weren't as bad as they could have been if this were a December storm with the temps into sub-zero range.
And today the snow plow finally went through. But with sunny skies and 70 degrees the snow is sinking into the ground really fast. Our sandy soils drinks this life giving water in very fast!
From now on we'll be sure to keep more storm ready. We've had 3 years of drought and dryer winters than normal. If this is a return to normal we'll have several blizzards this winter.
I know, I know...most folks are saying "head south ASAP" but we don't snowbird. We have to and actually want to stay home all winter to help out my 83 year old parents, feed cattle and go out and "play" in the snow with the ATV and tractor with blade.
