- zmotorsportsExplorerWe have pulled 14/14A several times in all of our coaches and it is steep, also there is not a lot of shoulder and nowhere to pull over if you do have issues, so if you are unsure of your rig or climbing steep grades I would highly recommend Hwy16. If you take Hwy 16 there is also a shortcut turnoff in Ten Sleep going north that takes you up to Basin and Greybull, then west into Cody on Hwy 14.
Hwy 16 has a couple of steep sections but there are also passing lanes and more like an interstate vs. a country two-lane road.

Years ago we pulled a tent trailer up and over Highway 14. Needless to say the transmission was in 2nd gear going down towards Cody. Didn't even think of taking 14A. Next time we took 16.
We took 14A last October, we had no problems at all, even with an HHR in tow. The road does get a little steep at times, climbs to 9000+, but the road is very well paved, plenty wide enough, and is a scenic highway in Wyoming. Maybe things have changed in recent years because the road looked like it had been recently paved. - SRTExplorer

- wolfe10ExplorerYup, we just did 16 two weeks ago on way from the Diesel RV Club Rally in Cody to the FMCA Convention in Gillette. No problem at all.
As with any other mountain road, you need to know how to drive-- both going up AND more importantly in coming down. - WyoTravelerExplorerThe locals don't even like to pull their stock trailers on 14.
- rgatijnet1Explorer IIIWe took I90 to exit 9 and then Alt 14 into Cody, WY. It is a beautiful drive but it also has some steep climbs. I did pass a DP pulled off to the side which I assume was to let things cool down. The steepest part is shortly after you exit I90 but after that the drive is fairly flat and the scenery is great. Elevations exceed 9000 feet so if you are not sure that your rig can handle the altitude you may not want to take this route. There are some turns but any size rig should be able to negotiate the road. It is one of the scenic routes through Wyoming. It is open range through the area so you do have to be watchful of cattle and sheep that may wander out in to the road.
We stayed last year in the Buffalo Bill State Park but the reservoir level is down so there was a little walk to the water's edge. Nice place to stay. - randcoExplorerI will also have to say Hwy 16. We are planning a trip to Colorado and Wyoming next year. We will be leaving Yellowstone's East entrance and heading to Hermosa, SD. I asked about the best route in the Roads and Routes area of this forum. I was told "Hwy 16" so that's what we have planned.
Have a great trip. I wish I was headed there now. - Executive45Explorer IIIAnother vote for Hwy 16.... in Cody, check out the Buffalo Bill State Campground....there are two, one close to town and another about 2 miles west. Go to the farthest one. Full hookups and tons of room. We had about 6 acres of open space next to our site.....Dennis
- TexasShadowExplorer II16 is the best route for you. There's a little RV park on the west side of Ten Sleep that can hold you and is shady and quiet. Nothing fancy.
