Deep Cycle Charge Voltage

Anyone know what the correct charging voltage for 12v Deep Cycle batteries is please? My solar charger has 2 settings for deep cycle flooded: 14.6v and 14.7v.

Thanks in advance for your help

Backwards! It is FLAs that not only tolerate, but REQUIRE higher volts. There is that stirring procedure and some say 15V is necessary to fully charge.

Do not stir AGM or Gel.

AGMs like higher current. Can't say re Gels.

Also, a fully charged AGM will be 12.8+ at rest. FLAs are 12.6+ by comparison.

X2, That is really wierd if that is the only 2 settings as normally would see something like 14.4 to 14.8 for FLA and 14.2 or less for AGMs. Unless that voltage range you quote is a misprint I would very leary of that controlller. Does it have a float stage and what is that voltage?

  • Flooded type cannot accept as high a charging voltage as AGM or gel type batteries so I would set the charger at the lower voltage. My Blue Sky solar controller adjusts the voltage output from 14.0 to 14.8 volts and can provide a 15.2v output for battery equalization (applies only to FLAT batteries). The voltage output varies both with the type of battery and the temperature of the battery if a temp sensor is used (higher temps results in lower charge voltage being applied).

Odd that yours only has a .1v difference with the settings. I would check with the manufacturer if they are in the USA. It may be a typo in the documentation.

I doubt it is critical but applaud you for asking. Now if you tell us about your batteries someone can answer.

    Are your batteries flooded/wet cell?
    Are your batteries AGM?
    Are your batteries gel?

    Hi,

Batteries are flooded 12v Duralast and I have 3 of them.

    Not AGM

    Not gel

Can't seem to find the manufactures recommended charge voltage. I've been Googling everything I can think of.

    Thanks for your help.

  • Check with the mfg. of your battery for correct charge voltages and rates. If your charge voltage is constant at either of those rates, battery death is certain. Typical float voltages is around 13.2-13.6v. Be sure to check the water levels in the batteries.

wow i didn't know it was that critical 0.1 volt difference.

Me either, but it must mean something as it has both settings.
