Design - What were they thinking??

Sometimes I wonder what RV designers were thinking. Have you experienced "design flaws" w/ RV's that have you shaking your head. I don't want to trash ANY brand - just wondered...

We love our Cougar 26SAB 5th wheel - But...The window over the sink pushes out and you can't open it and have the screen door open at the same time. We should have noticed - not a big deal, but what were they thinking?

  • well, our class c 24 footer. The kitchen sink is a corner and there is NO countertop to speak of....not sure who thought that was a good idea?

Windows in our C are all sliders but one....so if it rains, we don't get to open the windows? Our travel trailer (20 foot) has push opens mostly...like that ventilation.

Yeah, they need some experienced rver's to design for them.

  • LOL I agree. so what designer put the push out near the door, but put the slide one in a situation where it wouldn't matter?

Best I can say is engineering.

Is that spot between supports? Is that spot only with a XX inch window and that is what all could fit and the slide doesn't come in that size?

    I don't know :)

I know when they build these things we think convenience and not much of the true engineering side of it all.

    ??? :)
  • First thing we noticed is that with the hide a bed opened, you can't walk around it, it comes right to the edge of the counter top where the sink is. But wait...the counter dog-legs out...if we switch the couch and the table/chairs, the opened bed lines up perfectly and provides a nice aisle to walk around it. 4 lag bolts to move the table, that was it. One of those things that makes you go "huh".
  • Our new trailer is 4 feet longer and has a shorter awning than our old 17 ft trailer did. The only thing I can figure out is that they tried to leave space for the optional grill. Still it seems backward.
  • FunnyCamper - I understand about the cost of the window. We have several slide windows, roll open, and push outs. So if they would have tried opening the door before putting in the window above the sink, at least one person should have looked at it and said, no it won't work.
  • I don't understand the window thing either. Half of the windows on our TT are slide and half our the push out. The one behind the kitchen sink is a slide and there is nothing to hit it if it was a push out. The one in the bedroom is a push out and the door hits it when it is open. Makes no sense to me.
  • oh man how many days I said I wish I could design a floorplan :)

I need to get a job at one of the major manufacturers and tell them what rving is all about. but of course most of my changes would probably be shot down from engineers saying, well the frame can't carry that load there, or the plumbing doesn't flow easy that way, blah, blah.

but the window. It was a cheaper window. push out. cut the cost of the camper as a whole. I have all slide windows on my 5'ver. so that means I will never have to worry about a window hitting anything once pushed out. it slides :)

it comes down to cost on a camper. always cost.

BUT my peeve is my 5'ver now is the bunk room door swings out and 'just almost' blocks getting into the dinnette. ticks me off :) but I can live with it
  • I sometimes wonder whether there are any engineers or designers in the RV industry at all. A lot of things on my rig look like the guys on the shop floor made it up as they went along.
