So you’ve done nothing to the trucks suspension and don’t even have enough air in the tires, much less a heavy duty set of tires. Yes that tongue weight sounds like a lot because it is for a truck that size.
And other than “push” when passing semis we haven’t heard what the other undesirable towing traits are. (I can surmise that the heavy tongue weight causes some decent bucking over bumps though). But you said it doesn’t sway, so that’s good.
Pump them tires up all the way, max out the wdh however that works and then giver a try, is what I’d do.
Then decide if you want to upgrade the suspension, tires or the wdh.
Jmo.
And fwiw although I wouldn’t recommend it publicly, I’ve towed a lot of trailers on 1/2 ton truck P tires and cranked the rear tires up to 60+psi to get a trailer moved.
You’d be surprised the difference and trying it briefly would simulate some e load range tires that would take any tire flex out of the stability equation.
Thank you. You’re correct, I’ve done nothing with tire pressures quite frankly because I didn’t know I needed to. Where I screwed up these past couple years is not weighing the tongue. I was fully operating under the assumption of being below 1000 lbs. I bought a 1400lb equalizer yesterday, and took Wednesday off of work so I can setup that hitch and do some towing trials with increased tire pressures. I’m planning to hit the scales again as well. About what I am feeling, it’s just not a stable tow. The tail is wagging the dog. I don’t feel like I have a stable rear end of the truck, which sounds like it is tire sidewalk flex, so I am really eager to try towing at the 50 psi. Semi trucks don’t bother me that much because they will always move you around no matter what. What I’m saying is that in 15-20 mph winds, it shouldn’t be this difficult to control.
