Dinghy Towing

I want to use my 2010 Honda Accord, auto tran. as a Toad. A Remco printout says follow "Emergency Towing" procedures and it will be fine. Motorhome 2010 Dinghy Guide doesn't list the Accord. Has anyone actually use the 2010 Accord as a Toad and were there any problems?
Any information will be appreciated.
Thanks,

  • and before you spend dime one on this ask yourself...how much weight can I safely tow? do you know your GCWR, GVWR, GAWR and the actual weight of your MH as it is loaded and configured for travel?

generally, the maximum amount of weight you can safely tow will be the lesser of the following:

    • the GCWR (gross combination weight rating) of the MH minus the actual weight of the MH as it is loaded for travel (includes fuel, fresh water, food, clothing, people, pets, supplies, eyc)

    • the weight rating of your tow bar

    • the weight rating of your hitch

once you know then you'll be able to decide if you can theoretically tow the accord and can proceed to learn how to tow the accord.

    good luck
  • what does your owner's manual say? that is the first reference that should be consulted. that will give instructions if feasible. if not, do you feel lucky?
    bumpy
  • Not sure 'bout the Accord, but I do know that Honda used to support flat towing (using the emergency procedure as you mentioned) their Odyssey minivans. Then, they suddenly stopped supporting this, said not to flat tow them at all. Still, there were several people that reported successfully flat towing them, provided they followed the emergency procedures for such to a 'T'.

Not sure of specific year models for which this would work, nor if it applies with the Accord or not. Me thinks your best best would be to use a dolly or flatbed.

One other 'interesting' option I know some people have done successfully, that you might consider: Just let the Accord's engine run, idling, tranny in neutral, when flat towing it. This comes with its own set of risks, obviously, but is one simple, inexpensive way to allow almost any auto tranny FWD vehicle to be flat towed.
