Dingy towing a 2008 4X4 Silverado- Setup instructions??

A friend is dingy towing the above vehicle behind their m/h. I saw her set it up and thought at the time it was a bit too easy to set up ( ignition, transfer case, pulling fuses, etc.). Now they are home and the tranny is acting up.

I don't think they set the truck up properly before they left Florida for WI.

What do they have to do so I can pass it on.

Thanks, Gary

  • I tow a 2012 crew cab Silverado. It is easy to set up to tow. Just follow the directions in the book that came with it. I think it is basically the same over a bunch of years, the equipment may be slightly different. That's why file the book
  • The actual procedure, for getting ready a tow vehicle, even from year to year, can vary some. What's done on an '06 of a certain vehicle may or may not be the same on say, an '08 or, earlier or, later.

Ours is an '11 GMC Sierra 1500 Extended Cab 4x4 and, it has the electronic shift transfer case. In the book, GMC authorizes the truck to be towed as a dinghy, behind a motor home. The procedures are simple but, must be followed to the letter. If a step is missed or, possibly taken out of turn, it may effect how the vehicle acts when it's towed.

So, my point, while it may have looked simple to you as your friend readied their truck for towing, a step or procedure may have been out of place. But, I would think that, if that would or should happen, damage would have been done while towing it, not quite some time later.

I too think it might be a coincidence that, the tranny is now acting up, after a time of towing it. But, without being a GM technician and, evaluating that particular transmission and, asking the people who tow that truck about their procedure for "get ready", it would be really hard to give an accurate answer.

  • Have towed a 2005 and now a 2011 Sierra/Silverado and the setup is the easiest there is. Hookup the tow bar, make sure the transmission is in park, place the transfer case in neutral, take the key out of the ignition and lock the doors. Basically a fool proof system, IF you follow the 2 steps. NOTHING else to do.
  • Apply parking brake and foot brake. Put transfer case in neutral. Turn key off with transmission in park. Remove parking brake. I never pull any fuses.

I had an '06 Silverado and after several thousand miles pulling the transfer case got hard to shift. GM replaced the gears under warranty, but it was always hard. It was the manual transfer case.

I now have to electric transfer case and it's easy. I don't think, if the transfer case is in neutral and the transmission is in park, you could hurt the transmission towing it. Maybe a coincidence.

I literally xeroxed the page from the manual on the procedure and put it on my visor. I use it as a check list.
