Park at the pump. Walk into the store and wait in line while Bubba buys his lottery tickets. Hand the cashier some cash to get the pump turned on. Go back out and pump the fuel. Go back in and wait for Larry to pay for his hotdogs. Get your change.
Might I suggest leave the rig sit there at the pump and order 6 hot dogs prepared 3 different ways? - 2oldmanExplorer IIEven if they do it doesn't add up to a hill of beans. You're better off just looking for the cheapest gas.
- It's all about the money. The station isn't giving you 5 cents off. They are saving themselves 2 cents.
Typical charge by the card company is around 2%. At $3.50 a gallon that is 7 cents a gallon. Station is making $3.43 a gallon. If you pay $3.45 a gallon cash, the station makes $3.45 a gallon.
So you save 5 cents on 50 gallons and hand them $172.50 in cash. No more cost to them.
Or you pay $175 with credit. They pay the card company $3.50. On top of that there is the extra paper work (or most likely computer work) to get their $171.50 back. So take a little more off of their profit.
The card companies lose interest payments for those using cash so they fight back and give me 5% off of fuel purchases. Hoping I will not pay my bill off every month. So now the cost to me is $166.25 for paying with credit.
Don't pay that off for a few months and you are losing that saved money. - ktmrfsExplorer III

So let's say fuel is $3.50 per gallon. I get 4% rebate on my CC, that is .14 so WHY should I pay cash???
my thoughts as well, although my card give me 5% on gas purchases with the credit posted to the account each month before billing, so instant rebate every month.
AND I've found that on many stations that post a lower cash price, when I use my card, the fuel price comes up at the cash price not the credit card price anyway.
I do carry enough cash on hand to cover fillups if there is a issue with cards. - Not to mention WHY would I want to carry all that extra cash around? With the rebates given now on plastic, it does not make sense to carry any extra cash..
Depending on the trip, the amount of cash needed to carry would be rather large - Cummins12V98Explorer IIISo let's say fuel is $3.50 per gallon. I get 4% rebate on my CC, that is .14 so WHY should I pay cash???
- navigator2346ExplorerLook for stations that post cash and credit prices. The cash price is usually 10 cents a gallon cheaper
- BB_TXNomadNot unusual in this area for stations to have a cash price and a credit card price a few cents higher. The station (or any business for that matter) has to pay the credit card company a fee for each credit card transaction. So they are passing that fee along to you.
We used to own a small business and the monthly fee for credit card transactions can add up to a significant amount. - routefortyExplorerIt always appeared to me that you don't get a discount for cash, you're just not charged extra for using a credit card. But I guess you could spin it and say that that's a discount.;)
- rk911Explorerwe occasionally see signs posting a penny or two difference between the cash and credit prices.
