Do coiled power cords heat up and cause fires?

Pretty slim odds. One thing that might make a difference s the cord has been kinked numerous times and the inner wires are partially broken. Now you might get a hot spot that could catch fire as the effective cross section at the broken bit is much smaller and overloaded...of course that leads to the question of if that is really a coiling issue.
