According to the Canada Border Services Agency, a birth certificate and photo ID is enough to enter Canada, but be aware you both will need a passport, passport card, or enhanced drivers license, to re-enter the US. Anyone with a criminal record (including misdemeanors or alcohol-related driving offenses) may not be able to enter Canada without first obtaining an approval for rehabilitation.
