Always go to the respective gov't border agency websites for correct and up to date requirements and info. instead of asking internet citizens at large or relying on websites like tripadvisor. If any non-gov't website or other sources or your relative's friend of a friend gets it wrong, it's gonna be your fault if you get detained, penalized, harassed or worse. Rules and requirements can change in a moment's notice sometimes.
And when you're on these gov't websites check what's restricted or banned and other things generally what you need to know. Especially in these current trying times!
For visitors to Canada: CBSA
We live next to the border and have crossed into the US hundreds of times. We do all our camping in the US and also have a US mailbox and got NEXUS cards to make crossing faster and easier. I highly recommend it for anyone wanting to regularly cross the border. Best part is we usually get through in minutes while the lanes for everyone else can be backed up for a mile or more and take an hour or more to get through. Even the insanity on long weekends in the summer is a breeze to get through. :)
I don't know about passports but if your NEXUS expires, you can still cross and you have a grace period while waiting for your new one to arrive in the mail (providing you've applied for a renewal).
