Do you carry?

Folks:

There are times each of us has nearly run out of fuel on a trip.

Has anyone carried a 5 gallon can of fuel as a spare "just in case"?

  • Nope. I can travel about 325+ miles / tank. That is pretty much all day with my truck.
  • The one time I didn't we were returning from a day trip to a nearby area. Spent the day hiking and exploring and were nearly out of fuel when we returned. While we were gone a forest fire burned the power lines to the town, and the only gas station did not have a generator to run the pumps.

    So now we do.
  • Thanks folks for the response.

We do carry 10 gal gas for the generator but no diesel for the truck.

the last time that happened was 30-yrs ago. no reason to go beyond 1/4 tank full but we have an empty 2-gal tank we could use the toad to refuel if need be. we usually refuel at around 1/2 tank.
  • I used to worry about running out of gas when we pulled to yuma but I found out there are plenty of gas stations to stop at before that even became an issue. I make it a habit to plan ahead and if I think it's going to be an issue, I will stop and gas up when I get close to the half empty mark
  • I don't. I like to have a plan for my trips and part of that is identifying the best places to stop for fuel along my route so I don't run out.
  • I too have carried gas for the generator. But we will be taking a cross country trip next year so I'm planning to carry more than 2 gallons.Wish I had a diesel so I could add an auxilary tank.
  • I have a portable generator--so I do carry some fuel for it. I've never needed to use it for the RV tank. I start looking for fuel at 50% and at 12.5% I'll pay a high price to get the fuel.

If worst came to worst I could siphon fuel from the genny, but I'd really rather not.
