Goals are required if you truly expect to reach your life's ambitions. We started planning for retirement in our 30's (now 65 and 72) We said we would retire at age (55 and 62) Planned, saved, worked hard every year toward that goal. Downsized as soon as kids left and bought a home that would accommodate RV and toys and be able to be secured so we could travel most of the year. Downsized so far, that our friends said we wouldn't last 6 months. That was in 1996 and still in same home. A health concern (you can never plan for that) delayed our retirement by 2 years.
Raising our kids, we planned and set a goal every year of a family vacation that our kids would remember all their life. Took them to some wonderful places. We made the plans early as to where we would go and saved for that vacation.
Planned for paying cash for everything we would need, home is paid for and enough income to allow us to do what we want (all this through careful planning and goals)
If you aren't setting goals and planning ahead, you may never reach your desires. IMHO.
If you wait for things to just happen, probably aren't going to happen.
