For me, I see things in 3 main categories:
Dreams - things you want for the future but that you have not actively done anything to make them happen;
Plans - things you want for the future and that you are actively doing something to make them happen;
Life - what actually happens.
Most everyone has a thought about how they want their future to be. Some folks do everything under the sun to make that future come true; others just let life take them and hope it gets them to that future.
Goal, aims, objectives, milestones, etc. are all just ways to help folks think they're getting somewhere. But the truth is, all the planning in the world can go down the drains in as little as 30 seconds. Medical diagnosis, stock market crash, work layoff, divorce, death, etc.
For some people, they set goals and objectives, etc. because it gives them the drive to push forward, even when things don't look that great. For others, they don't set goals and objectives, etc. because it depresses them when they get off track.
Some people plan their path through life; some people dream their path through life; all of us live our path through life. For some, life matches up to what we plan or dream; for others, life ends up completely different.
Me personally, I plan things that are in my control, the rest I dream.
