My truck is a Florida rig, no hills. Now 3 weeks away from a cross country trip and really considering adding the exhaust brake... Will be heading across the Rockys going from SD to San Fran... So am I being over cautious? Really don't want to drop this much on this truck until I know it's a long term marriage.

Appreciate your help.
I would save you $$$. I have towed at 17K GCW thru the Rockies and Sierras without one and did just fine. It's true you need to pay strick attention to proper mtn towing, and your decents will be slower, but for the amount of time in your case you will significantly benefit from it is IMO not cost effective. I always started a decent in one gear lower than I accended in and only went higher if my speed continued to decrease. If in a higher gear I would downshift if my speed increase to much. I generally liked to be around 40 or so going down max.
