Do you think I should spend $2600 and add exhaust brake?

My truck is a Florida rig, no hills. Now 3 weeks away from a cross country trip and really considering adding the exhaust brake... Will be heading across the Rockys going from SD to San Fran... So am I being over cautious? Really don't want to drop this much on this truck until I know it's a long term marriage.

06 Ram 3500 dally Cummins
17,040 lbs of trailer....

Appreciate your help.

  • No, no way! I would take the $2600 and use it for part of the down payment for a new truck that has an exhaust brake. Your never going to get that money back, might as well use it to your advantage...
  • I would never spend that money to cross the rockies.

I drove an eighteen wheeler that did not have an eb.

I am not knocking them, however I think you will get one cus you are stewing over the issue.

Ask if you need Bilstein shocks before you leave the drive way. you will get the same answer from the Bil guys.

So spend the money if it makes you comfortable or other wise use the proper mountain driving techniques.

Have a good trip, you will love the rockies.

Get the exhaust brake! It will save your rotors, pads and nerves.

    And maybe your life.
  • Seems like a lot but you will be very impressed with the EB in the Rockies.
  • I towed for years sans EB, and now that I have one, I would not leave home without it. By all means, do it.
