Does anyone have experience with Convert A Ball?

I have a boat, utility trailer and travel trailer that gets towed behind our truck. The travel trailer uses a 2-5/8* weight distribution hitch. I don't like having to switch hitches when I go to tow something like the utility trailer that uses a 2* ball. Has anyone used a Convert A Ball for this application and if so, what was their experience?

Thanks, White Cloud

  • I think mine is the Adapt-a-Ball brand, not sure, but it has pins that hold the three different size balls on the trunnion and it rated to 8000 lbs. I used it recently to run a utility trailer at about 6500 lbs GTW and it worked great. I have mine mounted on an 8000 lb aluminum stinger and had a Hitchrider anti-rattle clamp on it. It was pretty solid.
  • I love my Convert-a-ball. Got it with my first truck 16 years ago. I've used all 3 ball sizes over that time with a screwdriver to push the pin through. I have the base mounted to an adjustable heght ball mount, something like this one but mine has higher ratings, I think 800/8k. I use it for all my non WDH trailers.

I would not recommend using the ball mount for the TT with anything else. It isn't worth my time to readjust that when switching trailers. So my WDH shank stays in the trailer when not in use and the Convert-a-Ball setup stays in my garage until needed.
  • I've got a utility trailer 1 7/8", boat 2" and my TT 2". I've been using my convert a ball for more than a few years, though not with the TT. I've got a 5 1/4" drop hitch for the smaller trailers and a flipped 2" hitch for the TT.

No problems with any of them over the years but I'd be a bit hesitant to use the 2 5/16" ball for any significant amount of towing. There is a bit of "slop" with each of the balls and I wouldn't want that when pulling something with the weight that a 2 5/16" ball is normally used for. Particularly something that requires a WDH.

Just my .03 cents. (normally .02 cents but my wife game me a raise in my allowance so I'm spreading the wealth!)
  • I have had convert a ball for probably over 20 years and love it, our son and grand sons also have them and love them. You can't go wrong, so convenient and easy to use. :)
  • I don't have any experience with Convert A Ball. I did consider one but, I didn't really need it
If my needs change, I would buy one.
FWIW, they have good reviews on Amazon..
