20-seconds to charge or 20-minutes? and I'm assuming that's at 240-volts?
Yah, a bit of a play on words, 10 seconds to plug in and 10 seconds to unplug, meaning I don't care how long it takes during the night to charge it only takes me about 20 seconds to do the connecting and disconnecting, However in answer to your question, if our leaf (30 KWH battery) was completely empty, (never the case) it would take about 4 to 5 hours to recharge it. It has a 6,6 KW charger. And yes that is using a 240 connection. Our other car has a smaller battery but also has only a 3.3 kw charger so its about the same. Really we tend to charge when they get to 30 or 40 percent of charge.
At a commercial CHaDemo charger it charges at a 50 KW rate so 30 minutes to 80 percent. Our leaf has a smaller battery than say a Tesla or a Bolt. For those who need more range they can go that route. For us 150 to 200 KM is more than ample range. If you get a medium range EV like our Leaf make sure you get the CHaDemo Quick charge option (standard on all new leafs) so in a pinch if you have a longer trip it charges quicker. That hasn't happened for us yet. Leafs are also cheaper and depending on where you live (country, state or province) they can cost in the mid 20's vice the mid 30's to a lot more. Shorter range EV's 120 KM and shorter can be purchased for around 10,000 used although some 5 year old EV's have a TON of mileage on them. Some not. Remember, people buy these as commuter so some put 25,000 to 40,000 or more kilometers per year on them.
ok, thanks for the clarification. we're not really interested in an electric car until we can get roughly 300 to 400-miles on a charge and a re-charge takes about the same amount of time it takes to fill the gas tank. not likely to happen in my time but you never know.
No problem re the clarification. Lots of people have questions so they can decide wether it is suitable for them, and the reality is, as you pointed out, it is not right for everyone yet. Glad I could help.
Re the recharge, the first 350 KWH charge station was installed a couple weeks ago on highway 15 between Vegas and LA. Now to be clear, no electric vehicle currently available charges at that rate yet. The closest is the Tesla at 125 KWH and again only for the first 80 percent and slower when colder. However that is expected to change in about 2 to 3 years so your wish of a 5 to 10 minute fill up is about that far away. However, price point is expected to be 90,000. Keep in mind that many BMW's and Mercedes are already considerably more than that and are no where near the car as a Tesla. Tesla sold 80,000 cars at 90,000 each this year and the only reason they didn't sell more is because they can't make fast enough.
Safe travels. Happy to answer any other questions if I know the answer. I'm not an expert, just a user and obviously an enthusiast.
