The pitch of the blades is important. I've noticed that even regular box fans or oscillating fans made today have smaller blades and little pitch? Why? It takes effort to move a lot of air, and that means a bigger electric motor and that means more (and expensive) copper wire in the motor. With the focus on low price, we get stuff that doesn't work well. Compare any Zero or Sunbeam or Hunter fan from the 1940's or '50s and you'll see how much larger the motor is and how much larger and steeply pitched the fan blades are.
