Our three are crate trained as well. We announce that "it's time to go" and they all get up and go to the crate. We leave for 3-4 hours and they sleep. They will start to bark when we are unlocking the door but only till they know it's us. I do leave the radio on if there are lot's of kids running around making noise, it bothers them.
This sounds just like my brother. I have camped next to them when they have left and one of the dogs barked non stop. He claims it was because they knew we were next door. We have arrived later than them and set up next door, they were gone and one of the dogs was barking and he said they knew we were next door.
I love my brother and I love his dogs but the fact of the matter is if you aren't there you don't know what the dogs are doing. He will swear on his death bed that the dogs don't bark when he is gone. I know better and he just isn't willing to accept that his "children" misbehave behind his back. I'm not picking on you guys but in reality unless you have a nanny cam to always monitor the dogs, you really don't know what is going on. That holds true for teenagers as well. Don't ask how I know that:B
