Dolly or Towbar

All things considered, I'd go w/ a dolly in a heart beat.
Bought the new (212) 4wd Jeep, never even thought about it couldn't be dollied ! So there sits my Demco dolly no good to me.
And all the hassle, time and money getting the Jeep to flat tow sure wasn't worth it. And we're not even thinking about brakes yet.
Sad part, I don't need a 4wd, if a 2wd I could have used the dolly, brakes and all.
Dolly or flat tow,....a no brainer !

  • You are correct. But I bet I could have figured that out all by myself ! :R

Actually, you CAN tow your 4x4 Jeep on a dolly. If you REALLY, REALLY want to!
All you need to do is get under it and remove the rear driveshaft from the rear differential yoke after you put it on the dolly. you can remove the shaft completely, or simply tie it up to the underbody.
    It is just that simple!
I once had a Datsun 4X2 pickup that I towed. I had to disconnect the drive shaft to tow it. It took about five minutes.

    No difference ??
On a towbar all wheels are turning
On a Dolly only the rear wheels are turning, which according to all the books will destroy the tranny in a short time.

I have it ready to flat tow, towbar, base plates, lights,.....but no brakes.

If I could have dollied it, I wouldn't need the towbar, the base plates, the lights........ and it would already have brakes.

The transfer case comes after the transmission in the driveline. With the transfer case in neutral the tranny isn't turning.

It doesn't make any difference. A 4x4 Jeep cannot be towed on a dolly. When in doubt, RTFM
  • My friend decided to tow the family car that was only towable on a dolly. That was a couple of years ago. Now he says he wishes he had traded his car for one towable 4 down.

I have towed both ways. For me, it is a no brainer, 4 down every time.

  • I guess I don't understand either. If it can be flat towed, surely it can be towed on a dolly. I don't see the difference.

Personally, I think you're better off flat towing anyway. Sure it costs more to set up, but in the long run it's much easier on you and a LOT more convenient.

  • Guess I don't quite understand. If the Jeep can be towed 4 down, why not put it on the towbar, set it for 4 down towing so the rear is free spinning and tow it on the Dolly?
Just a thought from someone with no idea of Jeeps.
