It happens. I was in Best Buy buying an iMac today when an older woman asked for $4K in gift cards. The cashier quizzed the lady about the purchase and she said it was for her grandchildren.
When I went back to pick up the computer the older woman was back with her daughter. The daughter said that her mom got a call that her grandson was in jail and she needed to buy the gift cards and call in the activation numbers to get him out. Best Buy attempted to cancel the cards but about three hours had passed and they had been used.
The daughter was getting hot with Best Buy for selling them to her mom. I spoke up and said that I was there at the counter when she bought them and the cashier quizzed her about it. They left quite defeated with instructions to call the police.
