Don't hitch up in a hurry like I did!!

:o:o

Start with a couple of those....

I was in Medicine Hat Alberta today, running a bit behind, thought I would be finished my work by lunch time.

Meanwhile, prior to that, I called my 80 year old aunt to say hi and she invited me to come over for lunch.

So I finish my work, running late and I'm in a hurry, quick shower, change and run out to hitch up.

I fire up my truck, do the usual thing I've done a thousand times and back up towards the ball. Stop short, get out to check my aim, run back to back up a bit more......

Well, I threw it into Park, foot off the brake and had the door open and was halfway out to check again and WHAM!!!! I missed Park, but scored a bullseye on Reverse!! :E As soon as I got off the brakes, the truck rolled back, the hitch ball pasted the trailer tongue and knocked the jack off the big block I set it on. My hitch goes crashing to the pavement as I leap on the brakes and put it in Park.

My wheel chocks? Glad you asked! Trailer was facing downhill so I got lazy and only put one in front of a tire......

I just stood there shaking my head at my own stupidity! Dumb schmuk!

So now I had to get out a bottle jack, and some blocks and pick my trailer up off the ground and put it on the hitch.

So I got it hitched up and took off down the road. Hmmmm whats clunking?....:h:h

Then I remembered my hitch lock pin laying on the ground where it landed when I dropped my trailer. So I drove around the block to retrieve it and put it in and found I also did not check my hitch latch. It was in the up position, for the first time ever. It always springs shut when I let go of it. This time it didn't. Could have had it come off the ball! But it didn't.

Sure saved some time didn't I?

I bet I never do that again. Been towing for 42 years and I've never pulled a bonehead stunt like that.

Take your time when you hitch up!!

And it didn't end there. See the post I'm going to put up in a few minutes about my awning on the highway!

I assume you had equalizer bars?

No, I have never used them. Never had the need.
  • Never be in a hurry, always check and double check.

I've learned that it's possible to do a walk around before moving the RV and still manage to drive away while still connected to shore power. :S
  • At least you didn't do any major damage. It's a good reminder for all of us. Thanks for sharing!
  • I am glad you posted that here.
It is a good reminder to all of us to take our time and double check everything .

I posted one a few weeks ago when I forgot to plug the TT into the truck and realized it fifteen miles down the road, and I have been towing for twenty years.

  • Being in a hurry is so bad in many ways! I did the same thing as you (forgot to lock the hitch coupler and pin it) but mine popped off the ball at 35 mph.....I actually put the pin in but the coupler was in the open position ugh. I always triple check things now.
