Door latch

Why do all trailers/RVs use the same old standard type door latch/lock? I've had 3 trailers/5ver and they all have been a pain in the rear. They never close easily, you gotta slam them to make them latch and sometimes (depending on the angle of the trailer) you'd think the window would break from slamming them hard enough to close. I've adjusted the strikers, filed the strikers and lubed everything but nothing seems to make them close easily for very long. Why wouldn't the builders make a regular house type round door knob work rather than the finger pull latch? Come on, we're well into the 21st century, you'd think they would come up with something better than what they've been using in the last 50+ years.
Has anyone come up with anything better? My wife complains about it all weekend and there isn't anything I've done that helps.

None here either on either one of mine! Just a slight push gets it closed.

A 5th wheel we had used to be like that. It was a rear entry and I suspect it didn't like stabiliser jacks! :E

Our current TT door (center) closes pretty much without any effort or 'noise'. I think leveling has something to do with it. :C
  • I found that if you lift the latch as you close the door that it latches just fine. The more you slam the door, the worse it gets. Lift the latch and quietly close the door.

I don't think they use regular door knobs because they are trying to keep it streamline with few things sticking out to get hit.

we've had the same issue as the OP with our last two MHs. adjusting the latch usually works...for a while

  • If you are tightening your stabilizer jacks to the point you are near lifting the camper, it's possible it's causing the frame to flex, thus throwing the door frame out of alignment, causing the door to open and close hard.
  • I use just a very thin coating of teflon trailer hitch lubricant, from Star brite. It is clear, waterproof, and lasts a long time. Just a tad on the striker plate, and leading edge of moveable catch. No slamming, just a push outside, pull inside, for easy latching.

    Works for me, YMMV
