The most important thing is to NOT rely on any "List of Towing Laws" for information! Every one I have seen is wrong about the towing laws in Montana!
Many are wrong about the speed limit. There is no "towing speed limit"!
Many are wrong about the maximum length for a truck/trailer/trailer combination
It is 75 feet, not 70 or 65.
Most are wrong about requiring brakes on a towed vehicle. It is called a Braking Performance Standard. You must be able to stop a combination of vehicles within 40 feet from 20 MPH on a level, clean, hard, dry surface.
To give an example of what to look for, here is a list of the Montana Codes Annotated (MCA) that one should be familiar with:
61-1-101 (since they are all 61- series, to save time and typing I will leave it off); 8-311; 9-411; 8-367; 9-304; 9-312; 10-104; 10-102; 8-303; and 9-204.
As you can see, it will require a lot of research of the laws of every state you plan to enter to ensure that you don't violate any laws. Many of these laws are not covered by any Reciprocity Agreements.
