I've run out refrig on the road on propane ever since we've had an RV with a refrig; 25 years. I can't imagine not having it on because ours is always going to be full of food and to not have it on would eliminate one of the huge pluses of having an RV. No doubt there is a tiny danger of having the burner exhaust right up against a gas pump but I've never heard of such a fire. Have encountered a couple of tunnels and ferrys that require the valve be turned off.
