A keychain laser from a dollar store is the perfect tool. Shine it at the window at an angle, catch the reflections on a sheet of paper. You will see a bright spot reflected from the near surface of each pane and a less bright spot reflected from the far surface.
I discovered this when we bought a bay window with triple glaze. It frosted up and the laser method dramatically proved they had mistakenly installed double glaze.
