Ease of Reese installation?

I posted a couple of weeks ago concerned about heavy tongue weight. Well we have decided on a different trailer that is 3 hours away, the new trailer has a rough tongue weight of 1350#'s.

Is it feasible to install the WD part of this hitch

I am not mechanically inclined but I can read instructions and turn a wrench. My concern is letting the dealer install it, I have seen the horror stories. Maybe I should just have the dealer install the WD portion for the drive home?

  • Thank you all, I have zero experience with WD hitches so I just wanted to make sure I had all my ducks in a row before I head that way.
  • Agreed. Most dealers have a hard enough time setting up a standard WD hitch, let alone setting up a Dual Cam.

    Yes you can just hookup the WD portion then install the DC when you get home.
  • I wouldn't tow a trailer with that much tongue weight without WD for any distance. Most dealers do not know how to set up WD, and if they do they do not want one of their techs tied up on it when they could be generating revenue on the next job. They will probably crank it up tight enough to level the truck, call it good, and send you out the door. I just don't trust dealers to set them up. Take a tape measure and check his work. If the hitched height of the front fender is not where the truck's manual says it should be, get them to do it over until it's right. You will certainly want the anti-sway portion installed, but you can get safely home without it, just maintain a reasonable speed and slow down if it begins to sway. If they don't adjust the WD correctly, that's easy to fix, but i would not let them install the dual-cam, it's just too instruction intensive and the measurements are critical and vary hard to correct if installed incorrectly.
    Keep in mind, you'll need to readjust the WD after you get the trailer loaded and if you add any addition items like helper springs or air bags.
  • I currently have only the wd part of my reese hooked up hoping for dry weather next weekend and I will install the dual cam portion...
    If you knew how tall the coupler on your tt is when level... tall off the ground... and you knew what style coupler you could assemble shank, ball and wd head (and be in the ballpark) then only need to add chain hanger mounts on your trailer when you arrive at dealer and snap up chains and be close enoigh for drive home... you want to fine tune wd set up with trailer loaded and ready to camp...
  • I would let the dealer instal it. You can get it home then do the fine tuning once you get it loaded up. Even if you only want them to instal part of it.

  • Most dealers have competent mechanics that can do a good job installing hitches. Let your dealer know that is what you expect, not the kid they just hired to wash campers, to install yours. It is still a good idea to read the instructions and understand how to adjust your hitch if necessary as things can change with loading and use.

    You trusted the dealer enough to buy the trailer from them, so why not trust them with a hitch? There have been horror stories about dealers that are next door to buyers much less 3 hours away. Just something to think about. I trusted my dealer to install my 5er hitch 8 1/2 years ago and never questioned it or have had a problem with it. Good luck.
