Electric fireplace

We went on our first adventure this weekend, and had fun! It was pretty cold, so we decided to turn on the electric fireplace ... But it wouldn't turn on. We tried both with the remote, and on the top buttons, and no dice. We checked the breaker, and it is on the same breaker as the hot water heater, which was working fine.

Any ideas?

Thanks! Jules
  • I too would expect a separate breaker. Check all breakers. When a breaker is tripped it is not obvious as the handle does not flip all the way to the OFF position. It just moves slightly off of the ON position.

If you are not getting any lights on the front panel then no doubt it does not have power. Could be breaker, could be plug came out, could be a loose wire, could be a bad power switch. If you can not find a tripped breaker or tripped GFCI plug, then look around the edges of the fireplace to see if there are screws that can be removed to allow the fireplace to pull out and let you see the power cord behind, assuming you are comfortable messing with electricity and such.
  • Advent, because hubby said so. I'm guessing the breakers are marked?

Good idea to check the ground faults! I will do that!

    Thank you!!
  • It's hard to believe they wired two power hungry appliances to the same breaker? Maybe it's mis-labeled?

Ours has a rocker switch which applies power to the unit, then buttons to control the lighted faux flame as well as the various heat levels (low/high/auto). Lastly ours has a thermostat dial. Make sure yours isn't turned all the way down?
  • How do you know it is on the same breaker as the hot water heater? Is the unit hard wired or plugged in via outlet? Mine is plugged in and on the same circuit as the ground fault plug in the bathroom, so when it is tripped it does not work. The units themselves are easy to remove, just remove the facia piece and it will be held in place by screws. Remove those and pull the unit out of the cabinet, then you have access to the switches and wiring. I've replaced one switch and the heating/fan element. Contacted the manufacturer and they sent the parts needed for a very reasonable price.

    Plug working loose?

I don't know. I'm not sure how you even access the plug. I wonder if it pulls out?
