- Hiker_01ExplorerWhat I always wonder about when seeing things like this (and Davenport IA had a truck eating bridge) is why doesn't either the city or the bridge owners (railroad) do something to permanently raise the bridge or lower the road. Yes, it's the driver's responsibility to avoid, but how much damage, over the long run, does each of those hits do to the bridge structure?
- Dave_H_MExplorer IIMy height is 12' 4".
I think the guy that did not slow down did a much cleaner job of shearing the air conditioners off. :R
Lester Holt has that video on the national news last night. - cbshoestringExplorer IIVideo has been around...
I understand the rental trucks; People moving in a truck they have no business driving, no clue to think about clearance issues.
I am confused by the company trucks and the RVers; They should know their height.
That bridge is very, very well marked. Yet, people slam into it like they think it is higher (or they are shorter).
I have always wondered if there was a sign out of view, that gave the driver a false sense of hope....how can so many people not have a clue how tall they are, and why are they ALL on that road.
AND YES....I have scraped a bridge.
I knew my tractor-trailer was 13' 6", but one day the boss asked me to take the straight truck on a local trip. I knew there was a 12' 6" clearance on that road, so I asked: "How tall is the straight truck?" He said it was 12' 5".
I didn't get stuck....cause it just scraped the "bow" of the roof on the way out from under the bridge---as the road came up.
Told the boss that truck is atleast 12' 7", and he might want to check for leaks. - gboppExplorer

I've seen it many times, it definitely doesn't get old. And, the bridge often gets new customers. - mgirardoExplorerI've seen it a half dozen times, but it never gets old and still makes me cringe. The first 5th wheel going through looks to lose everything off the roof.
I know my height is less than 12' 6", but I won't go under anything with less clearance than that.
-Michael - DutchmenSportExplorerI've never encountered a low clearance bridge, but I have encountered flooded roads, deep enough to cover the entire truck. Had to back-up 1/4 mile to get a spot to turn around. Blame it on TomTom for taking me down a flooded road!
One thing is certain, we can NEVER forget the height of our rigs ... and always pay attention when going under anything .... some campgrounds I've been too scare the stuffings out of me, low trees, tight turns can cause a real situation, real fast! - agesilausExplorer IIII came within a hair of driving under a short overpass in Bozeman. Fortunately my son was paying attention and warned me at the last second.
- Two_HandsExplorerJust a month or so ago we saw a fiver get stuck under the same type underpass in Santa Barbara, California.

Watch the video
Looks like 3 maybe 4 fivers get their a/c removed
This should work
Some scary watching, why a fiver driver needs to pay attention! - agesilausExplorer III
