Several years ago we had to do just what you are facing when I went from the 600/6000 Equal-i-zer hitch to a 1000/10000 Equal-i-zer hitch. Had to purchase a whole new hitch.
If I were just starting out today, I would go with the Blue Ox SwayPro Hitch. Their one hitch head is the same for all weights. All you have to do is change the bars to change hitch capacities.
