Unless you have the tension on them so light as to be basically non existant it's hard to envision how that could ever happen. All those pins do is to keep the bar from sliding off the "L" bracket during turns.

All it takes is the truck facing downhill and the TT uphill to unload the bars enough to pop them up an inch or two, and then turn and your out.
Leave the pavement and travel on a few dirt roads and it's possible, but not common. I have only had it happen only 2 or 3 time in 6 years and nearly 20K miles of TT towing thou. I got to where I was replacing the L pins once a year because of the bend. It's rare that one of our trips is 100% pavement thou.
