Well, besides than increasing the octane (and so permitting higher compression ratios) and absorbing modest amounts of water that might otherwise freeze the gas line in winter, I guess it does not do much good.
Ethanol in itself is not a terrible fuel, though of course modern car and truck engines are not typically designed to operate on it. It's generally stable, reasonably safe to handle, and compared to many other alternatives is less toxic and more readily produced.
Mind you, that's not to suggest that the current policies about its use in motor fuels are necessarily good or bad...that's an entirely different discussion from whether ethanol can serve very useful purposes as an additive in gas.
