You did mean that your mileage improves by 4-6 mpg not that you're only getting 4 - 6 mpg, right?

Yes it improving my mileage about 4 MPG. I jumped from 14 in the city to over 18.

Your lucky it's so easily available where you are.
We have to drive 20 miles to put it in our vehicle tanks.

Ethanol is pure crony capitalism. Payback to Big Ag contributors.
It is a net increase in use of resources and has caused billions of dollars in equipment damages There are lots that repeat the pr campaigning points, of the media attesting to its benefits, when science and honest reporting shows it is costing society and our pocket books big time, in all areas including most prominently food costs and avilability. Lots more corn and soybeans and a lot less in food crops and variety.

I run it in all my small engines, and RV generator...a little to spendy to use in my truck. I pay between 4.50 and 5.00 a gallon for it here.

E free gas will give you about 4 to 5% difference in mileage.

If anybody tells you appreciably more their math is wrong or their testing is flawed.

E gas will always give you more power because of the O2 and cooling effect it give your engine.

Here it might cost 10 cents to 40 cents more per gallon, at 30 cents it doesn't save me money in improved MPG. So I don't seek out the stations that have it. Lately about $2.40 for E10 or less, $2.70 for no ethanol. One of my vehicles is flex fuel, and I actually save money running E85 if the price is at least 60 cents lower, but I lately been finding that only in a couple of corn belt states that totally forego road taxes on E85. The Federal subsidy for ethanol has been shrinking, and may not much longer even cover the higher production costs.

I do buy it for my small engines, but all of those together don't use more than four gallons a year, so at twice as much it might be worth it to avoid equipment trouble on the tiny two-strokes.

I'm not a big believer in adding ethanol to gas. Most of the deal is to add money into agribusiness and it's a net drag on the environment.

But....I wish someone with some validity (Mythbusters?) would test small engines comparing ethanol fuel and non-oxygenated. My experience is that it doesn't make a difference. I do add fuel stabilizer into tanks when storing over the winter but I would bet the same amount of problems would be incurred using either fuel without stabilizer added. As far as operation, only outboard engines need to worry, AFAIK. All engines are constructed now with a fuel system that tolerates the ethanol in gas.

The following is my opinion:

The cost of producing ethanol is almost exactly the cost of producing gasoline.

However, our taxpayer dollars go to subsidise the corn growers who would otherwise rather grow crops that generate a profit on their own. Therefore we pay more for the fuel, indirectly.

There is no congress on the horizon that will resist writing the annual huge "FARM BILL" because of the lobbyists that support it and live off it.

The corn grown for ethanal is not identical to the corn grown for food, yet the labor and other costs are the same.

Corn syrup (food variety) is an ingredient in a huge number of food products in your local grocery store so there is a demand for it. Just for myself I avoid it and sugars in general. Check your food labels.

The published government reason is that we will eventually not have to import oil from countries that don't like us for the purpose of producing gasoline. Question: Is there a oil producing country that likes us from whom we buy?

The govt further poroposes we go to a 20% ethanol blend. However, it is known that this will cause rapid deterioration in the auto fuel systems unless ethanol-resistant components are retrofitted. Should be a considerable cost per car. If we switch to methanol (wood alcohol) this is even more costly.

The same test engines that determine octane ratings would probably be able to test efficiency of alcohol blend. If not that, then a dyno could.

Here in the People's Republic of California the gasoline composition is specified by law, so importing gasoline from another state is unworkable. This makes CA gas $070 to $1.20/gal more expensive at times. The periodic seasonal changover and the planned refinery maintenances oddly coincide with rises in the cost of oil. I wonder why?

Having said all that, we now have our very first diesel, and, happliy, current diesel prices are lower than regular gasoline. We don't count on that being always true.

I can buy E0 91-octane gas here. The increased price didn't offset the mileage gain in towing, but I use E0 gas in all my small engines.
This spring I had to strip & clean the carb in SIL's string trimmer. He let it sit all winter with a tank of E10 in it. May be a coincidence, but who knows?
