Etiquette question

My only concern is about attracting bears. For a period of time, whenever I fired up the smoker at home, we had a bear come visit us. Fortunetly the dog scared him off. I don't use the smoker while camping but I take great care to secure the BBQ when I'm finished with it just as a bear precaution.

Well, as long as they did not use a Generator,,late at night, while smoking a Cigar, or Cigarette,while having a Smokey Campfire,with screaming kids, running thru the sight......to grind their Axe...Hey, no Foul..:W..

I think it would be OK. As long as he is not smoking cigarettes. I can't think of anything worse than a person setting in their campsite 100 - 200 feet away and smoking. JUST JOKING................ We stopped in a City Park in Ottumwa, Iowa where they prohibited smoking in campsites. Did not say if this was wood smoke or cigarette smoke.

Nope, no problem. my buddy brings his and I never thought it would be an issue! much better than rotten wood in a campfire smell!

I cast one vote for the most obnoxious odor in a campground being the idiot that tosses his plastic plates in the fire ring. The smoke that comes off that must be toxic because you can't breath it in, it bring tears to your eyes, and it travels great distances without diminishing in strength. In this case I am talking more about in state park campgrounds with lots of transient campers. I have never run into this situation in a RV resort. The second dumbest campfire stunt is the person who tosses cans and foil in the fire pit. Do they really think their campfire is hot enough to melt metal?

A smoker, on the other hand, sounds pretty darn pleasant. Plus, a human's sense of smell often becomes immune to many smells in a short period of time. Did you ever notice how you, and the rest of the immediate world, can smell the great aroma of bacon frying out-of-doors?

But, standing right by the pan you cannot smell it so much after only 5 or 10 minutes.

Finally, I would agree that expensive cigars do not smell like cheap cigars. There is a big difference. I have not smoked for over 30 years, but I did smoke a good Cuban cigar once in my life on the deck of a cruise ship just because I could. It was different.

But people who smoke cigars in the same manner as people who smoke cigarettes generally do not buy that quality of a cigar. And they tend to keep one lit up almost around the clock. I worked with a guy who used to light up first thing in the morning and pull into the parking lot at work with a stub of a cigar in his mouth. Funny how no one ever car pooled with him. I wonder why??

If that's what makes you happy when you're camping, go for it. If you spend your life worrying about what other folks think, you'll never be happy.

Dang, this whole thread has made me hungry.

I don't think it would be any worse than any other type of outdoor grill or cooker.

The only problem they might encounter...folks would show up with plates in hand ready for dinner! That aroma might have the whole campground salivating!

I would think the smell would make me hungry but, I have no problem with it. The only time the campfire was a problem was one time when I had some really wet wood. It didn't burn so much as just smolder. I put the fire out quickly once I discovered the problem but, it was too late. It stunk up my clothes and camper so bad I had to air them out for a week. After that lesson I am more careful with the wood I pick to burn.

I smoke a lot of meat on the campfire while camping. I see no difference. Better to smell meat smoking than garbage burning in a fire ring.
