exercising Genny in the winter

When I winterized my motor home last fall I added Stabil to the gas tank, let it sit for several days so the Stabil could would have time to mix well and ran the generator for about an hour so treated fuel would be in the carb. I started the generator last month with no problem

I do this on my '01 power boss 5500 Generac that has lots of long hours when newer. It now sits in the garage.

Each spring before storm season starts I drain the gas and add fresh with Stabil...then run it for 10 min or so. I have a 18hp Briggs/18 hp Kohler and a 23 hp Kohler in various garden tractors and a zero turn that I can use the old gas a couple of gallons at a time.

I repeat the procedure in October before winter snow and ice storms hit.

I've done this the last 6-8 years and the 11 hp Briggs starts the first pull every time.

With engine running - shut off fuel, let engine die.

Add Seafoam or StaBil to your gas tank.

Check the carb as I recall mine has a very easy to operate drain on the bottom of the fuel bowl.

Install a shut off valve in the fuel line just before the carb.
Close the valve and run the generator until it stops.
I do that with a portable generator for the S&B.
Never a problem restarting.

Does your generator not have a fuel shut-off valve? Start it up normally, and when you have run it long enough, just shut off the fuel valve and let it run until it dies of fuel starvation.

You might also consider using one of those oil-mist things that are supposed to leave a thin coat of oil on the cylinders. After running the carb dry, you crank it over a few times while spraying the mister stuff into the intake. Helps keep the cylinder walls from rusting, and keeps the rings free.
