Extended service plan

Hi All,
We have a 2007 Itasca Suncruiser 38T. The extended service plan(Star) we bought with this coach will run out 8/13. I'm looking into a new plan. Good Sams just emailed me to get a free quote.
I have two questions: 1. Any suggestions on companies to check out? 2. Anyone have experience, good or bad, with the Good Sams plan? Thank you in advanced.

  • I've always wondered who would do the work with such a plan? Are they nationwide? Reliable?
  • Did you use the plan since you bought the RV? If not, you just proved the point so many tout, "self insure" and make the money your self, instead of giving it away. After I got shafted by one company that Jason Flowers was involved in and watched hundreds of others get shafted by the same individual when he got involved in other "extended service plans", there is NO way I would trust any of them to be there when I might need them.
  • We had GS ESP with our coach as soon as the factory warranty ran out. They did take good care of us. Now that our coach is a little older, we feel assured that we've gotten all the bugs out and really don't need the ESP any longer. Please note that when we looked into renewing it, they wanted more than three times the initial costs.

  • After 7 years on the warranty we got when new I just looked for another. The one we had plus two others were contacted and I went with one recommended on this site some time ago out of San Diego. Look them up at WHOLESALEWARRANTIES.NET, look at what is covered and ask all of the questions you can think of. They have different ones for the running gear only or the entire rig depending on what you need. I like the idea of paying up front and not being stranded outside East Overshoe, WY and not knowing where to go for help. There is nothing cheap on a class 5 truck and with 50K miles on it all things that move are taken care of.
  • I found that extended warranties are seldom worth what one spends. Having said this, one use can pay for the entire contract. I only bought ONE plan like this in my half century of driving and used it only ONE time. :S But if you can afford it and not need it; your call.:W
  • I bought an extended plan. 3 years about 2100 bucks. A month later the car is in the shop for about $4500 in engine work. I have to pay the $100 deductible. Still have 2 years 10 months left on plan. Sometimes the pay off sometimes they don't.

The key to making money in the Extended Warranty business is to collect premiums but not pay out much for repairs. Not to say they are all bad, there may be some good ones, I just don't know of any. Call around to some local RV repair shops/dealers, etc and ask them which ones they accept (if any) and which ones to stay away from.

In other words, assume your fridge when out and you need it repaired; call around and see what the local repair shops say. Give them a name; do they accept that plan?
  • Thank you all, for your input. I have a few months before the decision has to be made so I guess I'll keep researching.

  • My Montana was year old on April 6 th. bought Good Sams extended plan April first. Noticed a fluid leak in six point level system. My dealer called me Friday, said plan covered the $800.00 repair ( broken leveler etc. ) less my deductible. I am pleased to say the very least!

    X2

Most extended warranties are in the business of weaseling out of claims.
