Fifth Airborne Questions

I just picked up a fifth airborne and since mine is already winterized I might not get to it until next year but had some questions.

I assume that once you set the pressure, you leave it like that with periodic checking and don’t deflate/inflate it every time you hook up.
The instructions say to set it for 60psi and adjust from there. I am about 10K lbs. What do others keep theirs at?
When unhitching, how much does the pin ‘drop’ ? I assume that you just hitch back up the same way as with a regular pinbox and depending on how much the pin drops when unhitching it just pushes it back up, you do the normal routine then, tug test..re-check and go.

Am I missing anything or is there anything special I need to be aware of with this new pinbox?

I didn't see any videos of hitching.unhitching with this thing only a lot of install videos

  • While on the road, I never mess with the air pressure (80 psi for my rig). When I return home, I deflate to 15 psi. Why? because it makes me feel all warm and fuzzy. On my 5th Airborne there is a white inflation line that marks the proper pressure after hitching up. As long as that white line is where it is supposed to be I don't bother checking because as someone else said above, the volume is very small and you will probably let too much air out just checking it. Then you will have to drag the pump out and start all over.
  • When I had my 5th wheel, I kept the psi at 70. My air bag did not hold the pressure very well, thus checked pressure before every hook up and added if neccessary.

    Note sure where you got the information from that you can not change pressure while hitched.


    I check mine after hitching as trying to check air pressure almost always allows too much air to escape and due to the very small air volume and high pressure it requires adding air after the check.

    I have not had a problem with air loss and the check after hitching most of the time indicates I am good to go.

    ADJUSTING THE AIR SPRING
    1. Perform the hitching procedure following the proper hitching procedure according to the manual for your fifth wheel
    Hitch.
    2. Add air to the air spring at the valve shown in figure 31. Continue adding air until the skid plate is level (on level ground) see
    figure 31. (Use the Inspection Notch on lower jaw of the pin box and line up with bottom side of body.)
  • I do the same, check before hitching in the morning. Mine did say somewhere that you are not supposed to change or increase pressure while hitched. It has made a big difference in the ride.
  • I had that on my last fiver . . It works well , air it up and take it for a run to see the ride and adjust accordingly . . Mine was set at 75psi with a pin weight of 2800# . . I carried a small compressor with me as every trip it would loose air.. The hitch I have now does not do that ( Flex-Air )
