finally getting back to camping

Its been a long 12 months but now a much improved outlook is ahead. our last camping trip was topsail hill state park last year. Upon returning home, my wife began acting very strange. After doing a little detective work, I learned that she was doing things she shouldn't have been doing and promptly filed for divorce.

The process as most was long and difficult. But looking back, I am much happier now as our my children. I was able to get custody of my children, keep our family home as well as most belongings. I did allow her to take our truck (which was used to pull the 5er). So Thursday I am picking up my new 2013 3500 Denali and we are back to camping. The kids and I are so excited to get back to "normal" and look forward to a great camping season. We will have one local weekend trip and then back to Topsail as it has been planned for a long time.

I think one of the very best things you can do for your kids is camp with them. The closeness, reading stories, hikes, bike riding, and laughter while making s'mores etc. over a fire will provide peaceful and fun memories - and the knowledge that their dad is always there for them. Those memories will stay with them throughout their lives. Best wishes!

I agree. I remember when my dad up and disappeared, leaving my mom with 5 kids, a crappy car, and no bank account. She worked 28 days a month to keep house and home together. The 2-3 days she had off each month she used to take us camping. I'll never forget the first trip. As she sat under the dining canopy crying, my sisters and brother set up the campsite. She cried off and on the whole weekend, but especially when it started raining--she said it was all her fault. I realize now that there was much more going on with her, but we kids hung in there and strove to cheer her up. The last night we were there, we spent by the side of the river, drinking orange Crush, playing our guitars and skipping rocks. That was the first time I saw her smile after dad had left and it was the beginning of a whole new life for all of us.

Best of luck to you, OP. I hope y'all have a grand old time!

  • Thanks for the replies, the kids are doing very well and I feel that getting back to camping will only help them learing the "new normal".
  • Enjoy the next chapter! Glad to hear the kids are able to get back to something they enjoy. Take good care of them! Happy trails!
  • Sorry to hear of your troubles but glad you have found your way out and are enjoying this great lifestyle again. Keep a close eye on the kids as these things can create many issues for them.
