When I was stationed in CA years ago, I started with a I4 Perkins normally aspirated diesel and left with a I4 EFI gasser. Both pulled a Scamp into the Sierras every chance I got. My Perkins was slower with less than half the horsepower but would get twice the mileage of the gasser.
Revisiting the area with my PSD towing a toy hauler, those mountains seemed much smaller. Next month, my new CTD will be exploring the Rockies with 22K+ GCWR and I have no doubt it will be an easy trip where we get to watch the scenery instead of the 4-banger shift points.
