camp fires are a major focal point on camping trips for us. my next trip is looking like it may be under a total fire ban. this makes me sad :(. anyone have any fun tips for evening socializing? will be going with some old coworkers and our children. several toddlers and 2 babies.

As an alternative, you can get a propane "fire in a can" and at least be able to make smors, or cook hot dogs, etc. But, if you do, you still need to check if it is ok to use one.

I would think if there is a ban on camp fires, it would include all open flames.The ban sucks but, it's better than burning down thousands of acres and several homes.Is there such a thing as an Electric/LED Camp Fire? It wouldn't be as neat but you would still have a focal point for the evening gathering.I know, you can't make smores and hot dogs over a LED flame. :)

Does the fire ban include grills? You may be able to have a small wood fire in an elevated grill, like a classic Weber kettle charcoal grill. Try calling the campground and ask.

The National Forest ban on fires where I have camped allow propane fires and propane BBQ. No smoking, no charcoal and no wood, although they allow charcoal BBQ in an established forest service campground.

:SWe ended up with a total fire band in Oregon State parks last year. It never amazes me how people just can't get the term "No Open Flames". That and thinking briquets are safer than a fire. You need flame to start them, and the starting chimneys are one of the worst things I have seen!!! :S We had someone when we were still allowing briquets in the fire pits, one layer only using a chimney to start their briquets. Flames about two feet out the top, as we got there to explain that was too big of flame the guy removed the chimney and you could not believe the shower of sparks! Luckily the site was a gravel pad about 50' square and the light breeze was blowing such as they landed on the gravel. I agree camping without a Campfire takes out some of the fun, but better to skip the campfire and still have a campground, than to burn it down!
