Fire box/safety box/emergency papers. What do you carry?

I didn't really know where to put this, so moderator move if needed.

In the case of a fire (God forbid), I have an escape plan and a tested emergency escape window.

What I want is to have a small fire box with a handle that holds some basic items in case I need to get out fast.

As far as contents, I'm thinking a bit of cash, a spare drivers license or ID, credit card, toad keys.

Do any of you carry something like this? What do you suggest for contents? I'm thinking a combination safe in case I can't stop for the keys.

Thanks,

DS
  • I don't like the idea of having "extra copies" of sensitive personal papers, credit cards, information, etc. unsecured in an easy to break into trailer...

I carry all that kind of stuff in my wallet. Why not just put your wallet beside your bed at night...if you have to escape, grab it and escape.
  • Most of my important papers and copies of certain IDs are in a safe deposit box at a bank. Certified copies of some documents (property deeds, birth certificates, and personal insurance papers. Wills already filed and held by local court and attys) are in the keeping of a younger and trusted family member. The only docs I keep on my person are passports and c/cards. I don't trust those personal metal security boxes to be safe from a break-in, fire or much else that Mother Nature or mankind can dish out. I also scan important papers and keep them on a flash drive. The flash drive files will "hold my place" until actuals are received.
  • User, my first thought about your post was that everyone would have thought of this. Then I started thinking. The ?s multiplied.
"Where is the registration for the TT, passports, copy of Ins card, medical alert info, copy of ids, emergency contacts, dog papers (rabies) etc. Extra keys, a few bucks in cash, list of medications, alergies"
I knew I had all this but no clue where!
Its together now in a small fireproof safe next to exit. Thanks for the idea.
  • I don't carry one but, it's a good idea.

I would probably keep the registration and insurance card in the box. You'll need them in the event of a major fire.

And, a list of phone numbers in the event your phone doesn't make it out with you.

A combination lock is a good choice. But one option is to duct tape a spare key to the bottom of the box. If someone breaks into your RV they will take the box and break it open later.
The combination lock will not deter them from stealing the box.
