A halon-type extinguisher is likely going to be more effective, and much less messy than a chemical type. The halon type units seem to "seek out" the flames, which is a benefit when fighting fires under the dash, engine compartment, or other confined spaces. But once you use it, get out to fresh air asap.
Note: in some jurisdictions, the halon extinguishers have been outlawed.
The problem with Halon are those that don't know how to use it. It chokes out the fire triangle by removing oxygen in an enclosed space (the ideal use of Halon), could be a detriment to a normal person in a panic without proper gear....using Halon a space that has a feed to O2 is useless, so, while messy, a chemical bottle would be better.
I have two. One easily accessible no matter where I am at and one mounted in my outdoor kitchen, which is easy to get to if needed for an inside fire.
We do run drills...everyone knows how to get out and they all know their jobs in the case of a fire...I have my own inport fire party...I guess that is the Navy in me coming out.
