fire extinguishers: how many and where?

We'll be getting our new 24 ft Class C (Lazy Daze 24 TK) in a few months. I know it will come with one fire extinguisher, but I've been reading some sites that recommend more. How many do you suggest? Do you put one in the engine compartment as well as in the house? Do you have one in the generator compartment? How crazy should I get?

  • I have two 2 2A-10BC, one by the bed and one by the front door. These are for the sole purpose of helping me, Supreme Commander and the
4-legged fur kids get out of the MH.
Trust me.. you're not going to put out an interior fire in a MH with any small fire extinguisher.
I also have a 10lb ABC in an outside bay (right by the front door). I don't kid myself and assume that this is most likely to help someone else than to save the MH.
  • the small useless extinguisher provided is a joke,,, a minimum of one 2A-10BC multipurpose, serviceable (refillable) extinguisher. mount that small extinguisher that came with the trailer near the stove.
I also carry a 2-1/2 gallon pressurized water extinguisher by the bed.
The dry chemical extinguishers create a breathing hazard in a small area such as a trailer.
If i awake to the smoke detector, I want a fighting chance to get out,, water will not add more particulates to the air as the dry chem will.
Most of if not all components of the interior are mostly Class A materials. Water is the most effective extinguishing agent on them. Dry chem works good but is also is intended for Class B materiel (flammable liquids).
The extinguishing process with a multi purpose extinguisher creates a large cloud of extinguishing agent, this makes seeing and breathing difficult.
If we are not sleeping and a fire breaks out,, hopefully we will see it and evacuate the interior,,on our exit we can locate and deploy the dry chemical on the area of fire,, if the agent doesnt reach the fire, the cloud it creates will slow the burning process.
while sleeping at night we rely on the detectors to alert us. If i awake and detect a fire, I can use the water to hopefully knock down what flame I see and give us an atmosphere to be able to exit safely...

This is just my theory, after thirty four years in fire service i have seen both extinguishers used and this is what I believe to be the best protection for ME..

That little 1A-4BC extinguisher that came with my trailer is mounted right next to the stove.......A 2A-10BC is mounted at the front door and a 2-1/2 gallon pressurized is next to the bed.. and I have a 23' trailer.
  • We have 2-1/2 lb extinguishers mounted in the bedroom, the kitchen near the entry door, inside the driver's door, and a 5 lb bottle in the outside battery bay where the hatch is never locked.
  • A halon-type extinguisher is likely going to be more effective, and much less messy than a chemical type. The halon type units seem to "seek out" the flames, which is a benefit when fighting fires under the dash, engine compartment, or other confined spaces. But once you use it, get out to fresh air asap.
Note: in some jurisdictions, the halon extinguishers have been outlawed.
  • I would get one extra extinguisher for around the kitchen, or perhaps one mounted outside on the back somewhere.

In reality, if a fire started, and it wasn't small enough that I could put it out at once safely, I'm grabbing people and pets in the vicinity and running. RVs can go up in seconds, and I'm not going to put my life in jeopardy.

Entrance door, and by the bed. I think it is a waste to put one in the engine compartment or the propane bay as I won't waste time going into one of those areas if I am already outside of the RV.

Now, if you are talking about one of the automatic systems, I would consider the engine compartment, propane bay, rear of refrigerator, rear of water heater, rear of furnace. Of course, money is obviously no object here.

    X2.

Plus one in the truck cab.
  • There was a post on here a few hours ago about a guy who's fiver had an electrical fire. He went through one entire extinguisher, and still had fire. I only have one, but I'm thinking of adding one to the bedroom, and one to the truck.
  • Besides the one by the exit door, I have one near my side of the bed.
