Fire tools

In an activity where a fire is such a large part of why we do it how come finding simple fire tools is near impossible?

How many use nothing but a stick that they have found? Oh sure you can go into a speciality store & find really nice (expensive) sets of fireplace tools but to find a simple poker, a long handled wood gripper or a bellows is impossible.

I have both. The poker I stole from the house. The wood gripper I found in a Canadian Tire store for $15.

You would think that every RV supplies retailer would have these things.

  • Yea, you probably won't find anything at most camping related stores, but you can almost always find fire place tools at Lowe's or Home Depot. Usually in the fall their supply goes up. Watch when they start pushing electric heaters and usually the fire place stuff inventory increases also.
  • All of these items can be purchased very cheaply at Wal-Mart. I bought a poker and tongs for less then a dollar each at the end of the season on mark down there.
  • It's been a good while since I've been in there but Lodge used to sell not just dutch ovens but the whole shooting match for camp fire cooking.
Lehmans may have some. I've seen the hardware at Bass Pro, or at least some, in the past.
Too muh more to store and it's heavy and did I mention I'm lazy. I just find a stick or cut one which ever is easiest.
We do carry sandwich basket or whatever with long handle that you can cook a steak or two, over a fire and metal hot dog sticks or spears or something. Metal ain't the best idea. Nobody carries forked stick though. :)
Got a piece of rebar with a bend in it for stirring the ashes up or scooting logs around.
  • I use my awning unlatch tool. Works like a charm. Good luck.

These are my basic bonfire tools I carry with me...

Also have one of these in my RV TOOL BOX

I also always a couple of these propane lighters with me at all times...

I carry one of these 32-inch metal round fire pits as well on my off-road POPUP trailer front deck. I pack it upside down and usually have three logs under the base for the first fire in case we arrive late and havent located where to pickup firewood yet...

Camp fires is big part of our outdoor camping...

  • After installing a gas fireplace in our house I didn't need the poker set anymore. So I take the whole thing with me!
  • It may not be as big an activity as you think, and the market may just not be big enough to warrant stocking a rarely used item.

We don't have a fire so we don't have a need for them. I'm sure many other people look at their fire as place for social gathering so they aren't as concerned with the tools necessary to keep it going.
