Back when I burned 2-3 cords a winter and did it all myself, I preferred Northern Hydraulics' "Monster Maul"... a 12 lb steel wedge welded to a pipe handle. It'd crack the biggest laps by the 3rd whack. It helps to learn to 'read' the wood, tho', and know _where_ it's gonna crack easiest.
Yeah, safety glass are a dam' fine idea when splitting wood. If a wedge throws a spall at your face, you'll be glad you're wearing them. You're not a starfish; a lost eye will not regenerate.
