Firewood??

Get to campground. Ask camp host where to buy firewood. Pick up cell phone. Call firewood person. Tell him how much we want. He shows up with local wood in trailer. Tell him where we want it stacked. Pay him. Tip him. Enjoy morning and night fires.

It's one of those things you must deal with when RVing or camping. Some CGs prohibit outside wood, some allow it if you bought locally. I've seen a 5-bucks-an-armful stand on the road to most campgrounds.

What makes no sense is the confiscation of foreign wood. Most likely they will take the wood and burn it, which is exactly what I'm going to do anyway.

Absolutely!

Entire tree species are being devastated by various parasites and moving firewood is just spreading the parasites.

Buy all firewood locally and leave the leftovers for the next camper. Do not transport it.

I don't know where you camp but there is usually enough downed dead trees especially early in the season to make a campfire. Every state has signs that warn about transporting firewood and beetle infestations. Some NP or NF GC's actually cut the infested wood and it is free to burn as a way to control the infestation.

I always take firewood with us when we go. A lot of your privately owned campgrounds will let you use your own wood. If we are staying someplace that doesn't let you use your own then we ether buy theirs or don't have a fire...

I have a nice scrap box in my cabinet shop. It fills up with maple, birch, hickory and poplar usually. I always have some really thin pieces from the table saw that makes excellent kindling.

Do some checking on regulations where you are going. It is big fine if you are caught moving firewood from one area to another here in Minnesota and Wisconsin due to a pest infestation.

On our crosscountry trip last year, more places have restrictions than not - and I've seen forests die due to beetles so I get it. Traveling it wasn't practical to buy in town most times so I just had to suck up CG prices. A fire is a must for my kids to have the camping experience and I pretty much agree with them.

I do with CG's would not collect unburnt wood each morning. Since I can't take it with me to the next CG, I just leave it at the site, including partially burned wood. I understand a CG wanting to make money but the firewood was paid for. I try to give away wood that I didn't use at all to neighboors before breaking camp.

When setting up in a CG for more than a couple of nights, I usually bring wood or after setting up camp I take a short drive on roads near CG and look for firewood for sale. There is usually a road side stand set up somewhere near CGs selling wood cheaper than buying at the CG.
