Just one small correction to original post. The State Park in NM is Leasburg, not Leaman.
Today's romp included a close up walk to the river. By way of explanation, we learned from the camp office guy, they shut off the river on Sep 15th and open "her" back up in the spring! Who wudda thought? In April, or whenever the reservoir fills up, they open the gates to a lower diversionary dam, so the first water goes to irrigating things like pecan groves, chile peppers, and lettuce. All grown from snow runoff from up north. Oh, did I mention the several Holstein dairies we passed in this valley? I could hardly believe the first one, but there were at least four from Las Cruces to Radium Springs. I have seen what I thought were large dairies before, but I'm talking about Thousands of cows! I know what it takes to maintain a few hundred mlkers, but this is crazy big. If you put all the cars of the hired help from these four farms together, you'd think you were back at Walmart! Easily 150 vehicles (mostly trucks)! I never dreamed they could handle that many cows being milked! Really something to see.
We also toured what remains of an adobe military fort. Ft Seldon historical monument. Lots of great history and a wonderful lesson from the ranger on duty. Mr Holway (I think his name tag said Frank) really knows his history!
Funny, ending to the day. Researching for a place nearby for Mexican food. (You know, when in Rome...) first entry on Google is Taco Bell! Too funny! It pays to advertise! Be safe, traveler friends.
